U.S. Elections and International Kleptocracy: What to Watch for

Tuesday, 22 September 2020 | 11:00 AM ET (4:00 PM BST)

This webinar forms part of a series of panels, organized by RUSI’s Centre for Financial Crime & Security Studies, which will examine the impact of the U.S. elections on global illicit finance.

This November, U.S. citizens will choose the President who will lead the country during the next four years. As always, this American election is a global affair with far-reaching implications for other countries. This is especially so when it comes to fighting international corruption, including its worst manifestation – the widespread, systemic corruption that is often dubbed ‘kleptocracy’, or rule by thieves. As the world’s economic powerhouse, the U.S. is an attractive destination for the proceeds of foreign corruption. It is also home to professional advisers who can place their experience at the service of corrupt officials or entrepreneurs, sometimes in a manner that hinders U.S foreign policy or security interests.

The threat of international kleptocracy is increasingly drawing bipartisan concern – and, occasionally, even action – on Capitol Hill. And, with the election looming, how will the choice that the American people are about to make affect the prospects of the U.S. and global fight against kleptocracy?

Speakers include:

  • Elise Bean, former staff director and chief counsel of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations

The discussion will be moderated by Anton Moiseienko, Research Fellow, RUSI.
